Calvin Men's Lacrosse Suffers Overtime Heartbreak at Albion in MIAA Tournament Semis

Box Score ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin men's lacrosse suffered heartbreak on Wednesday night, falling 14-13 in overtime to Albion in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Making their first MIAA Tournament appearance since 2021, Calvin was on the precipice of its first-ever MIAA Tournament win as it held a 13-10 lead over the host Britons with 4:49 remaining.

Albion scored three unanswered goals in the final three minutes of regulation to send the contest to overtime and then scored the game-winner with 21 seconds left in the first overtime session.

Calvin led 7-6 at halftime but fell behind 10-7 early in the third quarter. The Knights then took back the momentum with a goal from freshman Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif. Crean Lutheran) with 7:03 left in the third.

The momentum continued with early fourth quarter goals from sophomore Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) and junior Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South) to tie the game 10-10 with still nearly nine minutes left in regulation.

With 6:10 left, the Knights grabbed an 11-10 lead on a wrap-around shot from in close by junior Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima). Calvin won the ensuing faceoff and Warners scored again, this time with 5:31 left to lead 12-10.
Albion called timeout but the Knights came up with the ball off a faceoff win by sophomore Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville Central HS). The faceoff win led to a one-two passing combination between Warners and Smith that led to a Smith goal with 4:49 remaining that gave Calvin a 13-10 lead.

The game took a twist when Albion was able to score with 2:59 remaining with one of its players suffering a serious injury on the play. After a lengthy injury delay, play continued. Playing down a man, Calvin was able to win a faceoff and take some time off the clock but the Britons regained possession with under two minutes left and scored with 1:52 remaining to make it a 13-12 game.

The two teams then traded turnovers with Albion regaining the ball with under a minute to play. The possession proved to be key for the Brits as they scored from the left wing with 26 seconds left in regulation.

Calvin did have the ball in the final seconds of regulation but a turnover gave the ball back to the Britons.

In overtime, Calvin had the ball on the offensive attack twice but turned the ball over on both occasions. The second turnover allowed Albion to push the ball up the right wing and from a tight angle, the Britons scored the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in the extra four-minute session.

Warners scored a career-high five goals to go with one assist in the loss. Smith pumped in four goals for his sixth hat trick of the season. He also bumped his career goal total to 86 to move into second place on the Calvin career list. His career point total also improved to 111 to move him into third place on the Calvin career points list.

Junior Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif. Trabuco Hills) had two goals and two assists. Carpenter and Coler had one goal apiece.

Hanson was 15 of 27 on faceoff opportunities to go with four ground balls.

Senior Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) came up with nine saves and six ground balls for the Knights.

Senior Ethan Boelens (Round Lake, Il./Grayslake Central HS) had one caused turnover and finished with a Calvin single-season record 53 (caused) turnovers. He finishes his career with 126 caused turnovers – second on the Calvin career list.

Calvin finishes the year 12-6, establishing a new program record for wins in a season.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great season," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "Really unfortunate to end it this way, but this team set a new standard for Calvin men's lacrosse moving forward. I'm so proud of what this group has accomplished and look forward to see what's next for our program."
