ALMA, Mich. – The Calvin University baseball team lost its make-up game from last week 14-4 in seven innings at Alma College on Monday.
 
Calvin (13-12, 4-3 MIAA) looked to jump in front early as it loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but Alma (13-11, 3-3 MIAA) pitched its way out of the jam without allowing a run thanks to a double play.
 
The Scots would carry that momentum to the plate, scoring four times in the first inning off Calvin starting pitcher Michial Schuster (Howell, Mich./Hartland), and then adding six more runs off Schuster and reliever Ryan Tschirhart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) in the second to build a 10-0 lead.
 
Calvin scored twice in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) and RBI-double from Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North), and the two hitters pushed two more runs across in the fifth thanks to a solo home run by Brown and RBI-single from Penn.
 
The early damage from the Scots was too much to overcome, however, and Alma closed the game with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
 
Schuster (0-1) took the loss on the mound in his first start of the season after pitching the first 1.1 innings.
 
Brown, Penn and Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) each finished with two hits to the lead the offense.
