GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin celebrated Senior Day with a dramatic 13-12 victory over Lake Forest Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
Jordan Warners picked up a loose ball and fired home the winning goal with just two seconds left in regulation to lift the Knights to the victory over the visiting Forresters (13-2).
Calvin improves to 12-5 with the win and will play in the MIAA Tournament semifinals next Wednesday night at Albion. Calvin's 12 wins is a new school record. Saturday's win also marked Calvin's fourth win of the year by two goals or less including its third by a one-goal margin.
Calvin scored the first three goals of Saturday's game and never trailed although Lake Forest came back to tie the game at 12-12 with 2:26 remaining.
Lake Forest won the following faceoff but turned the ball over twice, the second turnover coming with 1:17 remaining allowing the Knights to play for the final shot of regulation.
After calling a timeout with 49 seconds remaining, Calvin ran the clock down and then made a move to the goal with junior
Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) whirling around the Lake Forest cage and whipping a shot that rang off the cross-bar with four seconds left. Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran) was able to snare the rebound however and dropped in the winning goal with two seconds remaining. It marked the second game-winning goal of the year for Warners who also scored the game-winner in the final seconds of a 10-9 win at Illinois Tech on March 20.
Calvin led 5-3 after one quarter of play and 7-6 at halftime.
The Knights led 9-7 after three quarters of play and bumped their lead up to 12-9 early in the fourth quarter as goals from junior
Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South), Coler and sophomore
Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind. Noblesville) put Calvin up by three.
Lake Forest scored with 6:52 remaining and again with 5:57 left to make it a 12-11 game as the Forresters controlled possession of the ball. A turnover by Calvin with just over three minutes left gave the ball back to Lake Forest and the Forresters cashed in with a goal with 2:26 remaining to set up the frantic finish.
Despite giving up the fourth-quarter lead, Calvin had a strong day defensively, forcing Lake Forest into 11 turnovers while shutting down shooting lanes and blocking several shots.
Senior goalie
Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) also had several strong saves, finishing with 13 saves overall.
Carpenter was lethal on the offensive attack, scoring five goals on eight shots, setting a new personal-high for goals in a game.
Smith had three goals and one assist, bumping his career points total to 107, moving him into a tie for fifth place on the Calvin career scoring list.
Coler had two goals while Warners, junior
Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic HS) and junior
Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla./Oviedo HS) had one goal apiece.
As a team, Calvin came up with 39 ground balls led by Schaumburg and Carpenter who has six apiece. Coler had five ground balls while fifth-year senior
Micah VanDeBurg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had four.

Jordan Warners at the end. We are looking forward to next week as we prepare for the conference tournament."
