GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team swept Alma 9-0 in Wednesday's regular season finale at Strikwerda Tennis Center.
Calvin (17-2, 7-1 MIAA) clinched the second seed in next week's MIAA Tournament with the win thanks to a 7-1 league record.
The Knights started off strong in doubles play, sweeping all three of the matches to take the early 3-0 lead.
Marina Ribeiro (Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won in No. 1 doubles 8-3.
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 8-5 in No. 2 doubles, while
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) won in No. 3 doubles 8-2.
Calvin followed that doubles performance with a 6-0 sweep of singles play, including five wins in straight sets.
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian),
Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) and
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) each won 6-0, 6-0.
Catherine Grissom (6-2, 6-1) and Holman (6-2, 7-5) each won in straight sets, while Ribeiro (6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5)) won her No. 2 singles match in a third-set tiebreaker to complete the 9-0 win.
Alma fell to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in MIAA play in defeat.
