Calvin Women's Lacrosse Falls to Alma in Overtime

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team fell against the Scots of Alma in a 13-12 overtime heart breaker. After today's game the Knights fall to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA while Alma moved to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in MIAA play.

In the first quarter the Scots got out to a hot start as they kicked things off with a 4-0 scoring run to grab the momentum and the lead. With twelve seconds left in the period, Anneliese Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) found Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) to put Calvin on the board.

In the second quarter Smith, Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) and Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) all scored but Alma continued to fight through the Calvin defense, netting four goals of their own and heading into the half with a commanding 8-4 lead.

As the third quarter got underway, despite Alma scoring to begin the half, the Knight began to hit their stride as Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) scored off an assist from Petrusha. After that Calvin went on a 4-1 scoring run with Smith and Bethard adding to their totals while Kelly Ruha (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsville Armstrong) got in on the scoring action to bring Calvin within one of the Scots heading into the fourth quarter.

Three minutes into the final quarter Ainsley Gothard (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) weaved through Scots defenders and found the back of the net to even things up at 10-10. Chang followed up with another goal of her own to give Calvin their first lead of the game. However, Alma refused to back down as they quickly scored two goals and reclaimed the one goal lead over the Knights. With just five minutes left in regulation Ruha found Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Catholic) who sent the ball flying past the Alma goalkeeper to bring the score to 12-12. From that point on both teams locked in on defense as the clock wound down and the game headed into overtime.

Looking for a golden goal, the Knight put pressure on the defense with shot after shot sent towards the Scots goalkeeper but every opportunity was quickly smothered. With just seconds left in the overtime period the Scots earned a free position shot which they snuck past the Calvin defense and earned the 13-12 victory.

Alma out shot Calvin 40-32 but the Knights picked up 27 ground balls compared to the Scots 20.

Smith finished as the leading scorer for the Knights with four goals while Chang and Bethard each had two. Chang finished with a team high of five ground balls with Petrusha was close behind with four. In goal, freshman Margee Boelema (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity) recorded a season and career high 17 saves.

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, April 24th when they travel to South Bend, Ind. to take on Saint Mary's at 6 p.m.
