GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University baseball team could not contain the Adrian College offense in the late innings in a 13-1 defeat on Friday in eight innings.
The pitchers from both teams pitched their way in and out of trouble to start the game as the teams remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when Adrian (18-10, 9-3 MIAA) broke a scoreless tie against Calvin (14-16, 5-7 MIAA) starting pitcher
Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) with one run.
The Knights answered in the bottom half of the inning as
Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) led off with a single and came around to score on a groundout by
Carter Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) to tie the game 1-1.
The game remained tied until the sixth inning, when the Bulldogs scored three times to take a 4-1 lead against Calvin reliever
Jordan Eck (Rockford, Mich./Rockford).
The floodgates opened in the seventh as Adrian added six more runs against the Knights' bullpen, and then tacked on three more in the eighth on the way to the win.
Coil pitched well for the Knights, working around four hits and four walks while striking out six in five innings of work. Eck (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and one walk in 0.1 innings.
At the plate,
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) led the Knights with two hits and one stolen base.
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, April 20) when it finishes its three-game series against the Bulldogs with a doubleheader at Adrian. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
