Calvin Men's Lacrosse Triumphs at Trine to Hit Double-Digit Win Mark

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin men's lacrosse team secured a key 9-8 victory at Trine University Wednesday night, improving to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA.

The Knights are now tied with Albion for second place in the MIAA standings.

Calvin led 5-4 at halftime, built an 8-4 second half lead and later led 9-6 before a pair of late Trine goals made in a 9-8 game. Senior goalie Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) was able to make a key save with under a minute left and gained control of the ball in the process. Schaumburg's save allowed Calvin to clear the ball down the field and run out the remaining time left on the clock.

Calvin led 3-2 after one quarter of play, using a pair of first period goals from junior Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa. Allentown Central Catholic) and one from sophomore Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind. Noblesville) to lead after 15 minutes of play.

Goals from juniors Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South) and Jacob Bledsoe (Mission Viejo, Calif. J. Serra Catholic) boosted Calvin into a 5-2 lead but Trine came up with a pair of late second quarter goals to trail 5-4 at halftime.

Moyer notched a hat trick with his third goal, scoring with 7:42 left off a feed from junior Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) to put the Knights up 6-4.

In the opening moments of the fourth quarter, Moyer received a pass in front from freshman Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif. Crean Lutheran) and roofed a shot for his fourth goal of the contest to put the Knights up 7-4.

Sophomore David Blackmon (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) scored with 10:04 remaining to give the Knights an 8-4 advantage.

Trine (7-7 overall, 1-2 MIAA) came back with a pair of quick goals less than a minute apart to make it 8-6 with under five minutes to play.

Calvin reaped the benefits of a Trine penalty moments later and scored a man-up goal with 3:48 remaining with Coler cranking home a pass from Smith for a 9-6 Calvin lead.

Trine refused to quit and scored with 1:54 left and again with 1:31 remaining to make it a 9-8 game. The Thunder used a turnover to gain possession and called timeout with 1:07 left.

Out of the timeout, Trine took a shot from a tight angle that Schaumburg choked off and then smothered with the loose ball on the edge of the crease with 46 seconds remaining.

The Knights were then able to play keep-away with the ball from that point to hold on for the win.

Moyer notched his second hat trick of the season and the third of his career with his four-goal performance.

Coler had a goal and two assists. Junior Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif. Trabuco Hills) notched a pair of assists.

Sophomore Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) won 11 faceoffs and scooped up five ground balls. Senior Ethan Boelens (Round, Il./Grayslake Central HS) was credited with five caused turnovers. Schaumburg tallied 12 saves and four ground balls. Junior Josh Gage (Livonia, Mich. Detroit Catholic Central) also came up with four ground balls for Calvin.

COACHES COMMENT: "It's always good to get a conference win," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "We made some mistakes but were able to overcome them against a good team. We're excited to be in the position we are in and excited to get back to work tomorrow."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Alma on Friday at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field in MIAA action.
