GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University baseball team lost the final game of its three-game set against Trine University by the score of 8-7 on Monday.
Calvin (14-15, 5-6) looked to be in control early as it scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead.
Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) doubled home
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) and later scored on a
Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) sacrifice fly in the first inning, and Penn followed with a bases loaded, three-run double in the second inning.
Trine (10-18, 2-9) came back with three runs in the third inning, and then tied the game at 5-5 with two more in the fourth before Gillen singled home
Josh Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in the bottom of the fourth inning to wrestle the lead back at 6-5.
The Knights added to their lead in the sixth on a solo home run by
Nate Mason (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern), but the Thunder scored once in the seventh to cut the Calvin lead in half.
With the Knights leading 7-6 in the eighth inning, reliever
Levi Suter (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) recorded the first two outs, but the Thunder rallied with a hit batter and then two singles to tie the game 7-7. With runners on first and third base, Trine took the lead on a wild pitch from reliever
Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville).
The Knights threatened in the bottom of the eighth with runners at second and third, but the Thunder pitched their way out of that jam, and then stranded the tying run at first base in the bottom of the ninth to secure the one-run win.
Calvin finished the day with 10 hits and five walks at the plate but left 11 runners on base compared to six for the Thunder.
Gillen led the Calvin offense with four hits, two runs and two RBI. Mason went 2-3 and reached base four times, including his fifth home run of the season. Penn finished with one hit and drove in four.
Ian Schuster (Howell, Mich./Hartland) started the game on the mound and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Suter (0-1) took the loss in relief.
