ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin University women's tennis team closed its spring break trip with a 7-2 win over Carthage College at the USTA campus on Friday.
Calvin (8-1) got off to a great start, winning all three doubles matches with the help of two tiebreakers.
The number-one team of
Marina Ribeiro (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won 8-7 thanks to an 8-6 tiebreaker, and the number-two team of
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) also won 8-7 thanks to a 7-1 tiebreaker. The number-three team of
Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) and
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) won 8-4 to secure the 3-0 overall lead.
In singles, Carthage (8-6) won the top two seeded match ups, but
Catherine Grissom (6-3, 6-3),
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) (6-1, 6-0),
Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) (6-3, 7-6 (7-2)) and
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) (6-0, 6-0) each won in straight sets to clinch the overall win.
