Calvin Women's Tennis Takes Down Unbeaten Wittenberg 6-3

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Calvin University women's tennis team defeated Wittenberg University 6-3 in a battle of unbeaten teams on Tuesday.

The number-one doubles team for Calvin (7-0) of Marina Ribeiro (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil) and Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) started the scoring with an 8-5 win, while the number-three team of Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) also won 8-5 to give the Knights a 2-1 overall lead heading into singles play.

In singles, Wittenberg (7-1) took the top two matches, but the Knights won the other four points thanks to straight sets wins by Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian), Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) and Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) to secure the 6-3 team win.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Really nice wins for our programs today," Calvin head tennis coach John Ross said. "The bottom of our lineup really came up big for us in singles today for the women. Very happy with the way we performed and I'm looking forward to seeing us battle against some good opponents on Thursday."

NEXT UP: Calvin tennis returns to action on Thursday, March 7, when it plays against Concordia Wisconsin (11:00 AM) in Orlando.
