Calvin Men's Lacrosse Defeats Benedictine

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin men's lacrosse team took on the Ravens of Benedictine where they emerged with the 12-8 victory.

Calvin got out to a hot start with Riley Desarbo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) and David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) each scoring quickly to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead. Not long after Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) found Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) for another goal before Coler notched a goal of his own off an assist from Jacob Bledsoe (Mission Viejo, Calif./J. Serra Catholic). Benedictine fought back with a goal of their own but the Knights finished the first quarter with a commanding 4-1 lead.

In the second quarter the Knights outscored the Ravens 3-2 with Carpenter and Coler each recording their second goal while Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) also found the back of the net to give Calvin the 7-3 lead at halftime.

While Benedictine scored the first goal of the half the Knights dominated the third quarter as Coler and Carpenter continued their scoring rampage and each recorded another goal. Blackmon finished off the quarter by scoring two goals as the Knights continued to stretch their lead. Late in the fourth quarter the Raven went on a scoring run of their own but the deficit would prove to be too much as Calvin walked away with the 12-8 victory.

The Knights outshot Benedictine 62-24 while also picking up 53 ground balls compared to the Ravens 25.

Carpenter finished as the Knights leading scorer with four goals while Coler and Blackmon each finished with three goals. Sophomore Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) commanded the faceoffs for Calvin where he went 18-20 and picked up ten ground balls. In net, senior goalkeeper Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) recorded eight saves.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was a great team win today," said head coach Dave Hoger. "We had some injuries and guys out and a lot of guys stepped up in a big way. We are excited to get back to work next week to prepare for our final game before conference play starts."
