HOLLAND, Mich. – The 9
th-ranked Calvin men's swimming and diving team rolled to a 227-73 victory over 19
th-ranked Hope in the dual meet finale for both teams on Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center. With the rivalry win, Calvin concludes the dual meet season with an overall record of 9-5 with three of the nine wins coming against nationally-ranked opponents.
Sophomores
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) and
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School) provided a powerful one-two punch in the breaststroke. Â The duo tied for first place in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:05.41 with Hayes winning the 100 breaststroke (56.33) and Gemmen close behind in second (56.42). Junior
Anthony Crudele (Aurora, Il./Home School) was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.96) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.08). Hays was a triple-winner on the day, winning the 200 IM (1:52.08), leading a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the event.
Senior
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Oh./Brecksville-Broadview HS) was a double-winner, taking first place in the 200 butterfly (1:50.79) and 500 freestyle (4:46.01). Â He was second in the 200 IM (1:53.30).
Senior
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) was part of a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle, winning the race in 20.51 while senior
Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second (20.83). Peterson then led a 1-3 Calvin finish in the 100 freestyle, winning the race in 46.71 while senior
Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) was third (47.38).
Junior
Will Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was a double-winner on the boards, winning the one-meter competition with a season-best score of 280.25 with junior teammate
Jason Perez (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell HS) third with a season-best score of 230.00. Goodpaster then won the three-meter board with a season-best score of 262.90 while Perez was third with a season-best score of 254.40.
Calvin went 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle with freshman
Andrew Stimpert (Normal, Il./Normal West HS) winning the race (10:02.86) and freshman
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) second (10:07.01). Stimpert also placed third in the 500 freestyle (4:51.94).
Senior
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly, winning in a time of 48.67 with senior
Austin Martinson (Aurora, Il./Metea Valley HS) second (51.69).
Calvin went 1-2 in the 100 backstroke with sophomore
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) with Platt winning the race (50.72) and Martinson second (53.42).
Calvin went 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke with junior
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School) first (1:52.26), Platt second (1:56.79) and
Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Oh./St. Johns Jesuit HS) third (1:58.06). Ziegler added a third place finish in the 200 IM (1:58.88).
Junior
Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) was second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.23).
Calvin also swept both relays. Its 200 medley relay team of Platt, Gemmen, Camy and Peterson took first in 1:30.66. Its 400 freestyle relay team of Bajwa, Peterson, Molin and Platt won in a time of 3:06.37.
COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to use the rival meets for some extra energy this time of year," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We also got to swim in the championship venue, which was good practice. Our men were sharp all day long and were able to cruise to a victory."
NEXT UP: Calvin will prepare to compete at the MIAA Championships February 21-24 at the Holland Aquatic Center.
