MADISON, Wis. - Today the Calvin men's lacrosse team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Eagles of Edgewood. After dropping their season opener last week the Knights came out with a fire and defeated Edgewood 19-9 for their first win of the young season.
The Knights controlled the game right from the start as freshman Jordan Warners (Orange, Calif./Crean Lutheran) put the first points on the board for Calvin seven minutes into the game. Later in the period, Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla./Oviedo) and Joshua Moyer (Allendale, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) both netted a goal and with Edgewood sneaking in a goal of its own the Knights finished the first period with a 3-1 lead.
As the second period got underway the Knights really locked in as they went on to score six unanswered goals. Two of the goals came from junior Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills) while David Blackmon (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill./Honogegah) got their first goals of the game and Moyer and Griffith added to their total. The Eagles tried to get their offense going when they scored two goals near the end of the period but with ten seconds left Blackmon found the back of the net again for the Knights to give Calvin a 10-3 lead at the half.
The Eagles seemed to hit their stride in the third period as they found a way to score four goals but the Knights continued to keep pace as they recorded three goals of their own. In the final quarter the Knights really showed their dominance as they outscored Edgewood 6-2 and went on to claim the 19-9 win, their first of the season.
Calvin outshot the Eagles 70-43 and picked up 64 ground balls compared to Edgewoods 43. In goal for the Knights, Schaumburg recorded seven saves while Carter Sherman (Ada, Mich./Lowell) had four saves.
Nate Hanson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was 15-24 on face offs and finished with four ground balls. Coler and Griffith each had seven ground balls.
Blackmon led the attack for the Knights with five goals while Griffith was close behind with four. Moyer, Warners, and McKenney all notched two goals while Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South), Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima), and Riley Desarbo (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) each chipped in one goal. McKenney led the Knights in assists with four while Warners had three.
