Calvin Men's Basketball Scores 83-63 Road Win at Kalamazoo

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 13th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team finished strong in an 83-63 road win at Kalamazoo College on Saturday.

Kalamazoo (10-13, 4-8 MIAA) started on the attack, leading by as many as seven points in the first half (18-11 with 8:16 to play).

Calvin (20-3, 10-2 MIAA) would answer from distance, as Trevin Winkle (McBain, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) and Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) made three-pointers on three consecutive trips to get the Knights going before the Knights could close the half on a 12-5 run to take a 38-32 lead into halftime.

The Hornets continued to hang around in the second half, cutting their deficit as low as three near the 10-minute mark and trailed by only five (61-56) with 8:40 to play.

The Knights took control from that point, however, as they closed the game with a 22-7 run while holding Kalamazoo to only two field goals during that stretch to secure the win.

Calvin shot 50.0 percent from the field for the game while holding the Hornets to 36.4 percent, but Kalamazoo was able to hang around with the help of 16 offensive rebounds.

The Knights answered by getting to the free throw line, where it finished 19-25 for the game compared to 7-12 for the Hornets.

Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) led the Knights with 19 points and 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season.

Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) finished with 18 points on 6-10 shooting, helping him move past Jordan Daley for 22nd-place on the program's all-time scoring list.

Winkle came up big off the bench for Calvin, finishing with a career-high 13 points on 5-7 shooting to go with four assists.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Good win on the road," Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall said. "Kalamazoo came out really aggressive today. After a slow start we really picked things up at about the 10-minute mark. Trevin Winkle gave us a huge lift off the bench on both ends of the floor. Solid all around game from both Uchenna and Jalen, as well. Overall, a really good win."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, February 14, when it hosts Albion in the home finale at Van Noord Arena. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
