Calvin Women's Basketball Falls to St. Norbert on the Road

DE PERE, Wis. - Today the Calvin's women's basketball team competed in day two of the St. Norbert Tournament where they fell to host school St. Norbert.

In the first quarter, the Calvin offense got rolling early as junior Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) hit a three to give the Knights a 7-5 lead. Meanwhile, senior Valerie Dirkse (Vienna, Va./Marshall) got to work down low as converted on two layups through traffic. After the first ten minutes of play, St. Norbert led the Knights by just one point.

As the second quarter got underway, the Green Knights of St. Norbert locked in on defense and held Calvin to just a 28.6 shooting percentage, their lowest of the game. On the contrary, St. Norbert finished the half with an impressive 46.7 shooting percentage and claimed a 35-27 lead over Calvin heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, Calvin really started clicking on offense as they outscored the Green Knights 22-17. Fernandez and Dirkse continued to add to their point totals while senior Allie Mayes (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and sophomore Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich. Grand Rapids Christian) added some key baskets. As the clock wound down on the quarter, Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio Worthington Christian) grabbed a loose ball and found a wide open LaRue down low to bring Calvin within three points.

As the fourth quarter got underway, both teams exchanged baskets as they battled for momentum. With five minutes left on the clock Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) kicked the ball out to LaRue who hit a three pointer to give Calvin the lead. St. Norbert had an answer on the other end of the floor before LaRue scored again on the next possession to reclaim the lead for Calvin.

Unfortunately for Calvin, the Green Knights of St. Norbert ran down the last four minutes of the clock with a 10-0 run and Calvin fell 63-72.

The Knights finished the game going 25-59 while snagging 33 rebounds. On defense, the Calvin continued to use their height to their advantage as they had three blocks with Mayes recording two while Dirkse, Sensenig, Custer, and Hannah Sall each had one. Fernandez finished the night as Calvin's leading scorer with 15 points while LaRue was close behind with 14 points. Dirkse recorded 12 points while freshman Gabby Halliwill (Charlotte, Mich./Lansing Catholic) had 8 points.

Fernandez also recieved some extra recognition when she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

COACHES COMMENTS: "I thought our group showed some resilience against a good team on the road," said head coach Mark Christner. "Tough end of the game for us but we will keep evolving and growing. Big week coming up."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, November 12th when they welcome Wilmington College to Van Noord Arena for their home opener. Tipoff is set for 6PM.
