OLIVET, Mich. – The Calvin University women's volleyball team continued its run through MIAA play with a 3-0 win at The University of Olivet by the scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-12.
Calvin (17-8, 6-1 MIAA) raced out to an 11-0 start in the opening set and never looked back, trailing for only two points in the match on the way to the sweep.
The Knights opened the match with
Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) serving 11 straight points, including a pair of aces to set the tone. The Knights hit a blistering .636 on the attack in the set, recording 16 kills in only 22 attempts.
Olivet (13-12, 1-6 MIAA) hung around early in the second set, but the Knights took control midway through and ended the set with an ace from
Vanessa Martinez (Grandville, Mich./Wyoming) to take a 2-0 overall lead.
The Comets took their first lead of the match at 2-1 early in the third set, but a 9-0 run by the Knights helped them take control before scoring the final four points of the set and finished off the match with a kill from
Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck).
Calvin hit .297 on the attack for the match, led by Baker with 12 kills and a .308 efficiency.
Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) added eight kills, while
Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) chipped in seven.
Mackenzie Gerig (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) led the Knights with 15 digs, while Ekblaw led the defensive effort in the front row with six blocks. Ekkens and Kemp each finished with a pair of aces.
With the win, Calvin clinched the second seed in next week's MIAA Volleyball Tournament.
COACH'S COMMENT: We came out with a lot of energy and played well," Calvin head women's volleyball coach Dr.
Amber Warners said. "We played really well at the net with our blocking and hitting, along with our defense and setting."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action on Friday, November 8, when it hosts Alma College in the regular season finale.
