ANGOLA, Ind. - Tonight the Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Angola, Indiana, to continue MIAA conference play against the Thunder of Trine University.
Â
With both teams entering today's match undefeated in conference play the match proved that it would be a tight one from the start. In the first half, while the Knights outshot the Thunder 9-3 the score remained tied at 0-0. Junior Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Calvin Christian) and sophomore Katherine Bergman (Farmington Hills, Mich./Farmington) each recorded a shot on target but the Trine goalkeeper was able to come up with the save on both attempts.
Â
In the second half, the defensive battle continued as both teams struggled to create opportunities on the offensive side of the field. However, with just under twenty minutes left in the game the Knights were able to break through as the ball found freshman Shay Norden (Norton Shores, Mich./Mona Shores) just outside the top of the eighteen-yard box. After taking a settling touch, she skillfully sent the ball flying into the top left corner of the net to give Calvin the 1-0 lead.
Â
Fifteen minutes later, Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) gathered the ball in the right wing and went streaking down the field. She carried the ball to the end-line before sending to a cross towards the middle of the six-yard box where fifth year senior Lindsey Houtsma (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) drilled it home to extend the Knight lead.
Â
For the rest of the match the Calvin defense continued to put on a stellar performance and when the final whistle sounded the Knights picked up the victory and moved to 3-0 in MIAA play.
Â
Calvin outshot Trine 21-3 while Knights goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded three saves.
Â
COACHES COMMENTS: "Big win to earn three points on the road tonight," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "Trine is a very disciplined and well coached team and we knew that it would be tough to break them down. I am really pleased with how we moved the ball and were persistent in finding goal scoring opportunities. Also, credit to those who subbed in and changed the game for us tonight, that's huge for our team."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, October 12th when they return to Calvin Stadium to take on Olivet at noon with the Knights celebrating the members of its senior class during the afternoon on the Zuidema Field pitch.Â
