Calvin Football Continues Road Swing With Trip to Olivet

The Lead-Up
– Calvin is in its first season of intercollegiate football. The Knights are 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA after gaining non-conference wins over Oberlin and Anderson and dropping games to Concordia (Wis.), Kalamazoo, Alma, Adrian and Trine. Calvin is looking to bounce back from a 35-30 defeat at Trine last Saturday. Graduate student Chase Bradman has been strong for the Knights at the quarterback position, completing just over 58 percent of his passes (149-254) including 15 touchdown tosses. Graduate student Jaier Harden has been strong on the ground, gaining 553 yards on 95 attempts and four touchdowns. He averages 5.8 yards per rush. Freshman Luke Michmerhuizen has been Bradman's top target in the receiving column, hauling in 38 catches (15.92 yards per catch) and four touchdown grabs. Freshman linebacker Carson Schnurstein has 50 tackles and 2.5 quarterback sacks with junior Travor Martens close behind with 48 tackles to go with 3.5 quarterback sacks and two blocked kicks.

The Calvin Coach-Head coach Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he served as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.

MIAA Non-Conference Slate – Combined, the MIAA was 18-6 in non-conference football action over the first three weeks of the season with Hope, Adrian and Kalamazoo all posting 3-0 marks while Calvin, Albion, Alma and Trine were 2-1 and Olivet 1-2.

A Look at the Olivet Coach – Olivet head coach Dan Musielewicz is in his eighth season as head coach of The University of Olivet Comets. He has fashioned a won-loss record of 38-33 heading into Saturday's game. In 2019, he led the Comets to an 8-2 overall record and a second place MIAA finish. Before coming to Olivet, he was the wide receivers coach at Trine University. He is a 2005 graduate of Hillsdale College where he played four years of football at wide receiver and one season of men's basketball. He later earned a master's degree in coaching and athletics administration from Concordia University of California in 2012.

MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish eighth out of eight teams in the 2024 MIAA preseason poll with Olivet was selected to finish fifth. Alma was the preseason favorite to win the league.

More on Olivet  - Olivet enters today's game looking to bounce back from a 67-14 defeat at Alma last Saturday.The Comets picked up a 45-12 win over Kalamazoo on October 5 but have since fallen to Trine (35-28) and Alma. Olivet is led by dual-threat quarterback Thomas Foust who 719 yards on the ground with six rushing touchdowns while throwing (33 of 95) for 605 yards and three touchdowns. He was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on October 7 after accounting for 224 yards of offense in a win over Kalamazoo. Foust has a 73-yard run to his credit this fall. Junior running back Dontal Wright has 647 rushing yards on 138 carries for five touchdowns. A 2023 First Team All-MIAA selection, Wright has a 50-yard run to his credit this season. Senior SirQuarius Ball leads the receiving contingent with nine grabs for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Ball was a member of the 2023 All-MIAA Second Team. The Olivet defense is led in tackles by freshman defensive back Ricky Smith III who has 45 tackles. Sophomore linebacker Draven Langston is also one to watch. Langston has 31 tackles. Earlier this season, he was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on October 7 after recording 13 tackles in a 45-12 win over Kalamazoo. In MIAA games only, Wright leads the league in rushing yards (446) with Foust second (434).

Statistical Matchup – Calvin is ranked 60th nationally in Division III in passing offense (246.7 ypg) and 136th nationally in rushing offense (147.8 ypg). Olivet is ranked 229th in passing offense (103.1 ypg) and 11th in running offense (244.6 ypg). Calvin has forced 14 opponent turnovers (eight interceptions and six fumble recoveries) through seven games while losing 12 (seven interceptions, five fumbles) itself. Olivet has collected 13 turnovers defensively (seven interceptions and six fumble recoveries) and committed 16 itself – eight fumbles and eight interceptions. Defensively, Calvin is allowing 31.86 points a game, 134.1 yards per game rushing and 219.86 yards per game passing. Olivet is allowing 227.4 yards per game through the air and 139.9 yards per game on the ground while giving up 35.0 points a game on the scoreboard. In MIAA conference games only, Calvin is ranked fourth in passing offense (247.8 ypg) while Olivet is ranked eighth (98.3 ypg). Olivet is ranked second in the MIAA in rushing yards per game (285.0 ypg) while Calvin is ranked seventh (75.5 ypg).

Calvin Ground Game / Calvin Passing Game – Calvin's run game is led by graduate student running back Jaier Harden who transferred to Calvin from Division II Davenport University. Harden has 553 yards rushing with four touchdowns through seven games for an average of 79.00 yards per game. Calvin's passing game is paced by graduate student Chase Bradman – a transfer from Indiana Wesleyan University. Bradman is 149 of 254 passing with 1,630 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. Freshmen Luke Michmerhuizen leads the Calvin receiving corps. Michmerhuizen has 38 catches for 605 yards and four touchdowns. Hunter Hogan is next with 23 catches, 262 yards and four touchdown receptions. Freshman Jude Klunder has 25 catches for 214 yrads. Freshman Seth Ritsema had 19 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns. The Knights have eight different players with at least one receiving touchdown.

Tackling Tandem – Calvin freshmen linebackers Trevor Martens and Carson Schnurstein have combined for 39 tackles over their last two games. Martens had seven tackles at Adrian and followed with a career-high 12 stops last week at Trine. Schnurstein had a career-high 10 tackles at Adrian and followed with a new career-high 11 tackles last week against Trine. In conference games only, Martens is currently ranked fourth in the MIAA in tackles (32) while Schnurstein is ranked sixth (31).

Bradman in the NCAA III Stats – Calvin's Chase Bradman is ranked 48h nationally in passing touchdowns (15), 20th in completions per game (21.2), 44th in passing yards (1.630), 49th in passing yards per game (232.9) and 112th in completion percentage (.587).

Bradman in the MIAA Stats – In conference games only, Bradman is ranked third in the MIAA in passing yardage (977) as well as third in yards passing-per-game (244.3).

More on Calvin – Calvin features one of the youngest rosters in America this fall as the Knights feature 88 freshmen (54 true freshman, 34 red-shirt freshmen) as part of their 112-man roster. 10 players feature from other states including Texas (three), Ohio (two), California (one), Georgia (one), Illinois (one), Minnesota (one) and New York (one) with the remaining 102 coming from Michigan.

The Calvin Defense by the Numbers – (45 total)-  Defensive Linemen (15), Linebackers (14), Defensive Backs (16). 

Special Teams Unit – Calvin's special teams play has been solid this fall. Freshman placekicker Sal Ruffino is 9 of 14 on field goals with a long of 41 yards. He has also connected on 25 of 26 of his point-after tries. Freshman punter Logan Nap averages 36.21 yards per punt and has placed two kicks inside the 20-yard line. His kick down to the one-yard line in Calvin's season opener against Oberlin set up a subsequent two-point safety by the Knight defense – the first points in Calvin football history. 

National Honors – Calvin freshman Dylan DeHoop was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on Sept. 10 for his play in Calvin's opener. DeHoop picked up a pair of Oberlin passes including one in the end zone while making four solo tackles. 

Receiving Unit – The Calvin starting receiving unit features a strong West Michigan flavor as Ritsema (South Christian), Luke Michmherhuizen (Holland Christian) and Hunter Hogan (Ravenna) are listed as starters today. Also look for Rockford High School graduates Seth Anderson and McCoy Baxter as well as freshmen Kaleb Dubowski  (Big Rapids HS) and Jude Klunder (Grand Rapids Christian HS) to see time. The 6-7 Michmerhuizen is the second member of his immediate family to be a Calvin varsity athlete as his older sister Nicole was a multiple All-American for the Calvin women's track and field team including a national champion in the 10,000 meter run in 2013. Klunder's mother Tonya (Elgersma-Klunder) was a four-year member of the Calvin women's soccer team (1990-1994) while his father Dan (Klunder) was a four-year member of the Hope College men's basketball team (1985-1990). 

More with Michmerhuizen – Calvin freshman wide receiver Luke Michmerhuizen is currently ranked third in the MIAA in conference games in receiving yardage. In four conference games, he has 21 catches for 386 yards.

Double-Trouble – Red-shirt freshman Hunter Hogan has been a two-way standout for the Knights. On offense, he has 23 catches for 262 yards and four touchdowns and 21 rushing yards on nine carries. He also has two punt returns and is averaging 66.20 all-purpose yards per game. On defense, Hogan has 13 tackles, one for a loss and two interceptions.

Top Tight Ends – Calvin's top three tight ends include red-shirt freshmen Carter Bylsma, Paul Bouma IV and Tyler Porte. Calvin utilizes a lone tight end in its offensive sets but all three tight ends have caught passes this year with Bylsma snaring 16 catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns, Bouma IV seven catches for 46 yards and Porte two catches for 16 yards. 

OK-Red Flavor – The Calvin football team has a strong representation from the Ottawa-Kent (OK) Red Conference as Rockford (Caden Hyink, Seth Anderson, Drake Irwin, Mike Liggett, Jonah Carlson, David Ensley, McCoy Baxter), Jenison (Zaiden Chirco, Rowan Stewart, Colin Diekman, Trevor Martens) and East Kentwood (KJ Harp, ShaMar White, Breylon Cox, Kenji Nou) are all represented on the Calvin roster with a total of 15 O K Red alumni.

Cousin Connection – Freshman quarterback Drake Irwin and freshman wide receiver Jude Klunder are first cousins. 

Twin Sighting – Calvin Features a set of twins in Josh and Danny Hitchcock who are both freshmen offensive lineman out of Gobles High School. 

Traveling from Out-of-State – Calvin features 10 players from outside Michigan. Those players include junior Jair Nowlin (Sugarhill, Georgia), redshirt freshman Tommy Moore (Millsap, Texas), freshman Hayden Slegers (Ontario, California), sophomore Alexander Minneham (Lakeville, New York), freshman Kai Hanog (Weatherford, Texas), graduate student Pisith Soeun (Eagan, Minnesota), sophomore Preston Sellers (West Chester, Ohio) and freshman Austin Sellers (West Chester, Ohio), redshirt freshman Jaden Lewis (Spring, Texas) and freshman Maxwell Lenters (Palos Heights, Illinois). 

Whitehall Claims First Dibs – The first recruit to commit to the Calvin University football program was redshirt freshman Winton Napier who is slated to start at left tackle. Napier is one of three graduates of Whitehall High School on the Calvin roster joined by redshirt freshman running back Trenton TenBrock, and redshirt freshman running back Jackson Cook

Serving Our Country – Calvin freshman offensive lineman Adam Kiel out of Hopkins High School is currently a member of the Michigan National Guard.

High Schools Represented – The high schools with the most represented players are: Hudsonville Unity Christian (8)(, Rockford High School (7),  Holland Christian (6), South Christian (6) and Jenison High School (4).

A Look Ahead – The Knights host rival Hope next Saturday at Eagles Stadium on the campus of Grand Rapids Christian High School with kickoff set for 1:05 p.m.
