Calvin-Hope Volleyball Rivalry Set to Renew Friday Night in Holland

The Calvin-Hope women's volleyball rivalry is set to renew on Tuesday night when the two rivals meet at 6:30 p.m. at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse. 

The contest is a non-conference match. The two rivals met in conference play back on October 1, with Hope defeating Calvin 25-19, 25-20, 25-20.

Hope is ranked second in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll while Calvin is receiving votes in the poll. The Knights have been ranked as high as 17th in the poll..Hope is ranked fifth in the latest NPI ratings index, the new NCAA analytcs system used to rank teams in the lead-up to NCAA III Tournament selection. Calvin is ranked 38th in the NPI rankings which be be found online at: NPI D3 Women's Volleyball Index (10-20-24).

The Knights enter Friday's match with a five-match win streak including a three-set win over Kalamazoo College Wednesday night. Calvin is led on the attack by junior Aerin Baker with 3.35 kills per set and a .219 attack efficiency. Middle blocker Vanessa Martinez is having a strong senior and ranks fifth in the nation in total blocks (110) and fourth in blocks per set (1.35). Martinez is part of a strong one-two blocking combination for Calvin in the middle with sophomore Jasmine Namminga ranked 10th nationally in total blocks (90) and 14th in blocks-per-set (1.20). Calvin runs a 6-2 offense with three setters seeing action this fall. Sophomore Tryna Vander Zwaag averages 3.97 assists-per-set while freshmen Delaney Kemp (4.41 aps) and Grace Spoelma (5.14 aps) are also seeing significant action. Senior hitter Avery Ekkens is providing all-around support, averaging 3.59 digs-per-set, 2.91 kills-per-set and an attack percentage of .238. Junior middle hitter Emma Ekblaw averages 2.52 kills-per-set and has 59 blocks on the season. Freshman Mackenzie Gerig averages a team-best 3.72 digs-per-set. As a team, Calvin is ranked third nationally in blocks-per-set (2.76). 

The Flying Dutch are 20-2 overall and have won 12 consecutive matches including a three-set win over The University of Olivet Wednesday night. Hope's two defeats came at its own Hope College September Tournament when it fell to defending national champion and top-ranked Juniata College in four sets on September 13 and to No. 6 Wisconsin-Oshkosh in three sets on September 14. Hope's attack is led by All-American outside hitter Abbie VanderWeide who averages 3.42 kills-per-set and has an attack percentage of .267. Senior outside hitter Annie Locket has also returned after missing the 2023 campaign with injury and is hitting at a .299 clip with an average of 2.97 kills-per-set. Junior All-American setter Lauren Lee is the catalyst of the Hope attack, averaging 11.11 assists-per-set and 2.71 digs-per-set. Sophomore Kamryn Burbridge is the top blocker for Hope at 1.11 blocks-per-set which includes 17 solos and 32 block assists. Senior Samantha Seib averages 4.15 digs-per-set. 

In the first meeting of the year, played back on Octoiber 1 at Calvin's Van Noord Arena, Calvin was led in defeat by Baker who tallied 14 kills while Vander Zwaag and Kemp had 10 assists apiece. Namminga and Martinez had three blocks apiece. VanderZwaag had 15 digs..Freshman Mackenzie Gerig had 12 digs and Ekkens 10 digs. Hope was paced by VanderWeide with 12 kills and Burbridge with 11 kills. Samantha Seib had 20 digs. Lee had 41 assists. 

Calvin is led by head coach Amber Warners who is in her 23rd season as head Calvin volleyball coach and has a record of 673-114 over her career. She also serves as Associate Athletics Director at Calvin and is a professor of kinesiology.  During her first 22 seasons at Calvin, the Knights won three NCAA Division III National Championships (2010, 2013 and 2016) and recorded 13 seasons with at least 30 wins. Warners entered this season with a career winning percentage of .859, which ranked second-best among all active NCAA Division III head coaches.

Hope is coached by Becky Schmidt, who has led the Flying Dutch for the last 21 seasons. During her tenure at Hope, Schmidt has a record of 532-132 that includes a national championship in 2014 and 15 appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. A year ago she led Hope to the NCAA III Championship final. Schmidt is also a former standout middle blocker at Hope as a player. She was named a Division III All-American as a senior.
