Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Calvin Men's Soccer Beats Kalamazoo 4-0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin University men's soccer team defeated the Hornets from Kalamazoo College 4-0 on Saturday night in front of its home crowd at Calvin Soccer Stadium.

The Calvin (9-5-1, 2-1-1 MIAA) offense struck for three first-half goals and then added one more early in the second, while the defense held Kalamazoo (4-9-1, 1-3-0) to only six total shots and one shot on goal to earn the shutout.

Nick Augustyn (Westmont, Ill./Benet Academy) put the Knights on the board early with a long strike from outside the box in the 20th minute to give Calvin the early lead.

The Knights struck again off a set piece in the 33rd minute as Jake Ziolo (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) flicked a header past the Kalamazoo keeper off a corner kick from Alex White (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) for his first collegiate goal. White added one more first half goal to the Knights' tally in the 36th minute as he whistled home his seventh of the season from outside the box to send Calvin into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

After 16 minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, White added his second of the game (and eighth of the season) after Colin Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) dropped a crossing pass into the box for White to send home into an open net to finish the scoring.

Along with his five points on the night, White recorded five total shots and four shots on goal. Ziolo finished with three total shots.

Kaelen Matascastillo (Saint Paul, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) combined to make one stop in goal to record the Knights' sixth clean sheet of the season.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Really good win tonight," Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders said. "I thought were on it from the jump and were able to create some great chances and goals. Always happy to get a shutout, as well. A huge thanks to KnightNation, who showed up in spite of fall break. Great atmosphere, as always."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's soccer will return to action on Wednesday, October 23, when it travels to Albion College for a game scheduled to start at 7:00 PM.
