Calvin Men's Soccer Shuts Out Olivet to Gain Key Conference Road Win

OLIVET, Mich. – Calvin got back on the winning track with an important 2-0 road win at The University of Olivet Tuesday afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

Calvin is now 8-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAA.

The Knights used two early goals from freshmen Colin Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and Xtreme Hauk (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) to take the early lead and rode it from that point to victory.

Nieuwenhuis scored his goal – his fifth of the season – in the 15th minute of play off a feed from Hauk. Calvin had threatened early, and Nieuwenhuis found the back of the net to break the ice for the Maroon and Gold. The play began with strong build-up play and Hauk was able to slip a pass to Nieuwenhuis the defense for a one-time finish.

Hauk got into the scoring action three minutes later, receiving a lead pass from senior Alex White (Lake Bluff, Il./Lake Forest Academy) and blasting home his third collegiate goal including his second in the last three games. The goal came against the run of play and featured a strong move by White who angled a pass to Hauk who made no mistake on the finish.

Calvin held a 9-4 shots at goal advantage in the first half. The second half was played on more even terms with both teams firing four shots at goal with Calvin finishing the match with a 13-8 overall shots at goal advantage.

Senior Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown HS) went all 90 minutes in goal for the Knights, recording three saves and gaining the shutout victory. Nicholas Van Port Fleet had seven saves in goal for Olivet.

COACHES COMMENT: "Good road win," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "No easy ones in the league (MIAA) this year. Thought we played a fantastic first half to create some very good goals and were able to put together enough in the second half to get the three (standings) points."

NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Kalamazoo at 7 p.m. at Calvin Soccer Stadium.
