RESULTS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team had several big swims in a triangular with rugged Division II opponents Saginaw Valley State and Grand Valley State inside the Venema Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.
Calvin dropped both ends of the triangular, falling 178-120 to Saginaw Valley State and 213-85 to Grand Valley State.
Junior
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS) highlighted the afternoon, winning the 100 backstroke with a strong NCAA B' cut qualifying time of 48.49. Platt was part of a 1-6-7-8 Calvin finish in the race with sophomore
Ted Turnage (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) taking sixth (54.06), freshman
Logan McKinney (Jackson, Mich./Jackson HS) placing seventh (55.09) and senior
Logan Campbell (Yorkville, Il./Yorkville HS) placing eighth (55.37).
Calvin took second in both relays. Its 200 medley relay team of Platt, junior
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School),
Logan Campbell and graduate student Vladimir Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS) took second in 1:30.33. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of senior
Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville HS), graduate student
Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Molin and Platt took second in 1:22.46.
Junior
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) had a big day, placing second in the 200 butterfly (1:53.34) and third in the 200 IM (1:54.14).
Hays was part of a 3-4-6 Calvin finish in the 200 IM with freshman
Grant Ruster (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) placing fourth (1:54.19) and freshman
Diego Herrera Mora (Liberty Hill, Tx./CTP de Belen HS) placing sixth (1:58.90). Â Herrera Mora added an eighth place swim in the 200 freestyle (1:44.51).
In the 100 butterfly,
Logan Campbell placed second (49.07) with freshman
Andrew Taulbee (Reynoldsburg, Oh./Reynoldsburg HS) placing eighth (51.58).
In the 50 freestyle, Molin was third (20.61) and
Corey Campbell fourth (21.04). Molin added a fifth place swim in the 100 freestyle (46.67).
Junior
Jacob Ziegler (Toledo, Oh./St. John's Jesuit HS) was seventh in the 200 butterfly (1:58.32) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:58.50).
In the breaststroke, Gemmen was fourth in the 100 breast (56.65) and sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.38). Ruster added a seventh place swim in the 100 breaststroke (57.60).
In the 1000 freestyle, sophomore
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) was fifth (10:15.83) and freshman
John Reeder (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) sixth (10:36.08. Halberg was also eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:01.66).
Senior
Wil Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was second on the three-meter diving board (294.10) and sixth on the one-meter board (247.20).
COACHES COMMENT: "It was a good day for our men's team," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We exceeded my expectations. We talked about looking for opportunities and making the most of them beforehand and I thought we did that today. We put up some great times including a B' cut by Charles and I think we showed we've developed a bit more depth which is exciting."
NEXT UP: Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts the MIAA Relays at 5 p.m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
