KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team traveled to Kalamazoo where it extended its win streak to five in a row with a 73-47 victory over the host Hornets.
After today's matchup the Knights improved their record to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in MIAA play while Kalamazoo fell to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA.
In the first quarter both teams competed for momentum as they traded baskets. Neither team had more than a one possession lead until six minutes into the game when freshman Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) nailed a three-pointer from the right wing to stretch Calvin's lead. After that the Knights seemed to find their rhythm and finished the quarter with a 21-11 lead.
In the second quarter Kalamazoo came alive as it held the Knights to just a 35.3 shooting percentage while it posted a 57.1 shooting percentage. However, despite the lopsided shooting statistics the quarter remained even with each team scoring 16 points and allowing the Knights to head into halftime with a 37-27 lead. Allie Mayes (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), Grace Rosser (Allendale, Mich./Allendale), RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) and Weigers all had 5 points apiece at the half.
In the second half, Calvin swarmed the Hornets on defense making it difficult for them to convert on even the simplest of shots. During the game the Knights recorded four blocks and forced Kalamazoo to make 24 turnovers. On the offensive side of the ball the Knights scored relentlessly, outscoring the Hornets 14-7 in the third quarter and 22-13 in the fourth.Â
Calvin finished the game with a 40.9 shooting percentage while holding Kalamazoo to a 32.6 shooting percentage. Calvin dominated in the paint outscoring the Hornets 40-14 while the bench continued to provide the Knights with a major boost as it was responsible for 40 points during the win.
Weigers and Rohrer led the way for the Knights in scoring with eleven points each while freshman Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) tallied eight points. Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and Mayes each chipped in seven points while Valerie Dirkse (Vienna, Va./Marshall) had six points.
COACHES COMMENT: "Another quality road win versus an improved Kalamazoo team," said head coach Mark Christner. "Defensively, we did a really nice job in the second half and today was a great day for our bench. We received some great contributions today up and down our roster. Big week ahead for us."
