GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The eighth-ranked Calvin University men's swimming and diving team defeated Wayne State University (WSU) in duel meet action 166-111 in the final home meet of the season on Saturday at Venema Aquatic Center.
The Knights opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay by the 'A' team of
Corey Campbell (Kentwood, Mich./Grand Rapids, Christian),
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Ohio/Homeschool),
Forrest Peterson (Cross Plains, Wis./Middleton) and
Vlad Molin (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) in a time of 1:30.55. The 'B' team of
Austin Martinson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Metea Valley),
Mohamed Abujiba (Cairo, Egypt/Summits International School),
Jazz Widney (Wellsville, N.Y./Jenks) and
Zachary Logan (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian) took third in a time of 1:35.31.
The 800 freestyle 'A' relay team of
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School),
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview),
Josh Seidelman (Northville, Mich./Northville) and
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) took second in a time of 6:50.1.
In individual race action,
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won the 100 butterfly with an NCAA 'B'-cut time of 48.64.Â
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) took third in that event (51.85). Hays also won the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:53.17, followed by
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville) in third with a time of 1:58.53.
Calvin finished with the top six in the 50 freestyle, led by Peterson in first place with a time of 20.79. Molin, Campbell, Widney, Camy and Logan rounded out the top six.
The Knights also had the top three finishers in the 100 freestyle, led by Platt (45.99) in first and followed by Peterson (46.35) and Widney (47.16).
Gemmen took home two first-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (57.02) and 200 breaststroke (2:06.26). Abujiba followed him in fourth place in the 100 breaststroke (59.07).
Chimes won the 200 butterfly (1:52.22), followed by Hays (1:56.76) in third place.Â
In the 100 backstroke, Martinson (52.96) and
Jacob Ziegler (Sylvania, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) (54.3) finished second and third, respectively. Ziegler also took second in the 400 individual medley (4:15.73), followed by Bajwa (4:15.88) in third place.Â
Wil Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 281.25 and took fourth in the three-meter competition with a score of 296.7.
Jason Perez (Kalamazoo, Mich./Plainwell) won the three-meter competition with a score of 316.5 while finishing third off the one-meter board with 250.8.
The event finished in the 200 freestyle relay, which the Calvin 'A' team of Platt, Peterson, Campbell and Molin won with a time of 1:22.32.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We are in a tough stretch of competition and we wanted to continue to build some momentum and not throw away some good opportunities," said Calvin head swimming and diving coach
Dan Gelderloos. "We definitely had some good energy on deck and the atmosphere set us up for some great swims. Beating Wayne State on the men's side was a first in quite a while."
