Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jalen Overway Scores 42 To Lead Calvin Men's Basketball to 89-63 Win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The fourth-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team was dominant from start to finish in an 89-63 win over Alma College at Van Noord Arena on Saturday.

Sophomore center Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was the star of the show, scoring 42 points on 16-27 shooting from the field, including 4-4 from beyond the three-point arc.

The 42 points marked Overay's new career high and is also the first 40-point game by a Calvin men's basketball player since Chris Knoester had 40 points in 1993. The 42 points is the sixth-highest single-game total by a Calvin player in program history.

Calvin (16-1, 6-0 MIAA) controlled the game from the start, leading for 39:09 of the 40 minutes. After the Scots cut Calvin's early lead to 14-12 with 11:14 to play in the first half, the Knights responded with a 31-6 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 27-point lead before heading into halftime with a 48-22 advantage.

Overway took advantage of Alma's (8-9, 2-4 MIAA) decision not to double for much of the day and scored 24 of his points in the first half on 10-14 shooting. Defensively, the Knights held the Scots to 30.8 percent in the half and forced seven turnovers (leading to 10 Calvin points).

The Knights pushed the lead to 30 points early in the second half before a 12-0 Alma run kept the Scots within striking distance, but Calvin never allowed the lead to go under 16 points the rest of the way as it cruised to the win to remain unbeaten in MIAA play.

Calvin finished the day shooting 49.3 percent from the field and out-scored the Scots 52-30 in the paint. The Knights also dominated the glass, out-rebounding Alma 42-28 and finishing with a 17-2 edge in second-chance points.

On top of his 42 points, Overway also grabbed 13 rebounds (six offensive) to record his 11th double-double of the season.

Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) was the only other Calvin player in reach double figures with 14 points and also added four steals. The Knights also took advantage of the score and got 17 total players into the contest, with 12 of those 17 scoring at least one point.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I thought we came out with a lot of energy to start the game," Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall said. "You always get worried about that hangover after a big Hope win, and I think we didn't do that. Overall, it was really great to get a lot of these guys on the bench some time. Those guys sacrifice so much every day that they work so hard, so I'm just happy we could reward them with a chance to play and do some pretty cool things. That was fun to watch."

"He did a great job," Sall added about Overway. "He hit some threes today, which was awesome. He can shoot those. Just an efficient game by him."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, January 24, when it hosts seventh-ranked Trine University at Van Noord Arena in a battle of top 10 teams. That game scheduled to start at 7:30 PM.
