RESULTS
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Calvin men's swimming and diving team competed in a power-packed quadrangular of nationally-ranked Division III opponents at Carnegie Mellon University.Â
The meet consisted of No. 8 Calvin, No. 12 Johns Hopkins, No. 9 Carnegie Mellon and No. 6 Denison.
Calvin fell in two of the three head-to-head duals within the competition, falling to Denison 165-133 and Carnegie Mellon 174.5-123.5 while defeating Johns Hopkins 155-132.
Calvin set two pool records in the meet.
The Knights closed out the meet by winning the 200 freestyle relay in a pool-record time of 1:22.09. The relay included junior
David Bajwa (Bethesda, Md./The Heights School), sophomore
Charles Platt (Downers Grove, Il./Downers Grove North HS), senior
Forrest Peterson (Middleton, Wisc./Middleton HS) and senior
Vlad Molin (Rolling Meadows, Il./Rolling Meadows HS).
Bajwa took first in the 100 freestyle in a pool-record time of 45.78 with Molin third in 46.74. Bajwa was also third in the 100 backstroke (50.07).
Peterson shared first place in the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.86) while senior
Corey Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (21.20). Peterson also placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (50.47).
Platt took second in the 200 backstroke (1:50.86) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:42.09). Sophomore
Timothy Hays (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) was second in the 200 IM (1:52.40), fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:52.60) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (51.08).
Senior
Eric Chimes (Broadview Heights, Oh./Brecksville-Broadview) was second in the 200 butterfly (1:50.69) and sixth in the 200 IM (1:54.62).
Senior
Julien Camy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong meet, placing second in the 100 butterfly (48.80) and seventh in the 200 butterfly (1:52.70). Â
Sophomore
Caleb Gemmen (Mentor, Oh./Home School) was fifth in the 100 breaststroke (56.28) and eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.43).
In the distance events, freshman
Ryan Halberg (Novi, Mich./Northville HS) was eighth in the 1,000 freestyle (9:57.32) and ninth in the 500 freestyle (4:45.67).
Junior
Will Goodpaster (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton HS) was third on the one-meter diving board (238.25) with junior
Jason Perez (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell HS) taking fourth on the three-meter board (237.80).
The Calvin 200 medley relay team of Platt, Gemmen, Camy and Bajwa took second in a time of 1:30.33.
COACHES COMMENT: "Was a great afternoon swimming against some very strong teams that don't usually see until the NCAA III Championships," said Calvin head swim coach
Dan Gelderloos. "I was impressed with our preparation and willingness to test our skills against the best. We will be stronger because of it. To leave the meet with a pair of pool records was a bit of icing on the cake."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Kalamazoo and Olivet in a double-dual meet next Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Venema Aquatic Center.
