WAUWATOSA, Wis. - The Calvin University women's tennis team started the 2023-24 season with a 9-0 sweep at Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) on Friday afternoon.
The Knights started strong in doubles, winning each of the three matches to take a 3-0 overall lead.
The top team of 
Catherine Grissom "Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and 
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 8-6, followed the number-two team of 
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and 
Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) winning 8-3. The number-three team of 
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and 
Julia Hooker (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won 8-1.
In singles, all six matches were won by Calvin in straight sets. 
First-year player 
Marina Ribeiro (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil) won the number-one singles match 6-0, 6-0, with Holman (6-4, 6-2) and 
Catherine Grissom (6-1, 6-1) winning their numbers two and three matches. 
In the second half of the line-up, Shoemaker (6-3, 6-1), 
Rachel Grissom (6-0, 6-0) and Norman (6-2, 6-3) completed the sweep with their wins in straight sets.
Calvin improved to 1-0 on the season with the win, while WLC fell to 0-2 in defeat.

NEXT UP: The Calvin women's tennis team will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 9) when it travels to MSOE for a match scheduled to start at 3:00 PM (CST).
