BYRON CENTER, Mich.- The Calvin Division 1 ACHA men's hockey team defeated Aquinas on Friday night September 29, 5-3 at Aquinas. The Knights move to 3-0 on the season, following last week's wins over Cleary University.
The Knights struck first from a goal by Jacob Siebenga with 13:38 left in the first period. Aquinas fought back late in the first and would score 2 goals before the end of the period. Kirwin Johnson scored for first for Aquinas with 3:53 left in the first and Dylan Rumpke capitalized on a power play to put Aquinas ahead with 1:23 left in the first.
Calvin would take control of the game in the second period scoring 4 goals. Jacob Siebenga scored his 2nd of the matchup, with 15:21 left in the 2nd. Steven Ickes, Noah Kramps, and Ethan Pool would also score in the 2nd to put Calvin up 5-2. Aquinas' Matt Denhartigh ended the 2nd period with a bang, scoring with just 4 seconds left.
Both teams struggled to find the back of the net in a slow 3rd period. The game ended without another goal scored and the Knights finished the game with a 5-3 win.
COACHES COMMENT: Head Coach Mike Petrusma-"A good road win against one of our hockey rivals. We didn't finish well, but we had terrific effort."
NEXT UP: The Calvin Knights face Aquinas again at home on Saturday night. The game will be held in Grand Rapids, at 7:30 PM.
