GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin fell to the visiting Firebirds of Carthage College 4-2 Wednesday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Calvin (6-2-0) opened the scoring in the fifth minute on a penalty kick goal by senior
Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) after Calvin sophomore
Jacob Ryu (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) was tripped up in the box to draw the spot kick.
Carthage found the equalizer in the 20
th minute and then grabbed the momentum with a pair of goals inside the final five minutes of the first half to build a 3-1 lead at the break.
Calvin got right back in the game with a goal in the 51
st minute as senior
Aguma Muhumuza (Baton Rouge, La./The Dunham School) headed in a serve in the box from junior
Alex White (Lake Bluff, Il./Lake Forest Academy).
The Knights pressed for the equalizer but Carthage (5-2-0) scored a fourth goal against the run of play to close out the scoring.
Carthage finished with a 16-9 shots at goal advantage with the Knights outshooting Carthage 7-4 in the second half.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts John Carroll University at 6 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
