GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a matchup of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin claimed a 1-0 victory over visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday night at Zuidema Field. Calvin entered the non-conference showdown ranked 19
th while Ohio Wesleyan came in ranked 24
th.
The Knights improve to 2-0-0 with the win.
Senior
Chris Schau (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored the only goal of the game, rapping in blast from the top of the box off a pass from senior teammate
Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) in the 55
th minute of play. The goal was the third of the weekend for Schau who netted a brace in a 4-2 Friday win over St. Norbert.
The Schau goal broke the ice on a cagey opening 55 minutes between the two long-time non-conference rivals with both sides playing the long game in seeking scoring opportunities.
Calvin began to pressure in the opening minutes of the second half however and broke through 10 minutes with the wind at its back.
Ohio Wesleyan (0-1-1) pressured down the stretch and forced Calvin senior goalkeeper
Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christan HS) into making five key saves.
Wunder's best save came in the 74
th minute as he snared a blast by Ohio Wesleyan's Owen Kriebel that was headed for the top corner.
The Battling Bishops also had a big chance off a Calvin defensive turnover with just over five minutes left in regulation but a clean breakaway by the Battling Bishops sailed wide with Wunder charging hard off his line to cut down on the angle.
Calvin held down the fort over the final five minutes to seal the win.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Calvin 18-12 with Calvin holding a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
COACHES COMMENT: "Great win against a really tough Ohio Wesleyan side that is going to be one of the top teams in the country this season," said Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders. "We had some really good moments for big portions of the game but we knew that Ohio Wesleyan would come at us strong at the end like they always do. We had some nervy moments at the end but a credit to our back line and Daniel in goal for holding strong. We'll take the three points, rest up and get ready for Cornerstone on Tuesday night."
NEXT UP: Calvin will travel up the Beltline Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. contest at Cornerstone University.
