Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Today the 21st ranked Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Chicago University to take on the Maroon in a non-conference matchup.
The Knights had the first chance of the game when they were awarded a corner kick just two minutes into the first half. Calvin has been deadly on set pieces so far this season and looked to continue that trend as Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) sent a looping ball into the box. In the crowd of defenders Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) claimed possession before laying it off to sophomore Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) who sent the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Knights a quick 1-0 lead.
As the game continued, both defenses held strong until the 30th minute when Chicago found a chink in the Knights armor and scored a goal to tie the game. This seemed to give the Maroons some momentum as they struck again in the 44th minute to give Chicago the 2-1 lead going into halftime.
In the second half the Knights came out hungry as they set up for a corner kick in the 55th minute. Just like before, Williams sent a ball in, this time finding the head of Iverson who put it into the back of the net to make it a 2-2 game.
In the 80th minute Calvin sent the ball into Chicago territory to where Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) collected and charged forward. As she entered the eighteen yard box the Maroon goalkeeper came charging out and instead of getting the ball, tripped up Farrell and the referee awarded the Knights a penalty kick. Judd, who already had a goal on the day, stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give the Knights a 3-2 lead.
The Knights packed it in on defense as the clock ran out and Calvin improved its record to 5-0-1. This also marks the second time Calvin has defeated Chicago on its home turf and the first time since 1989. While Chicago did outshoot the Knights 12-8, junior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded 6 saves in the win.Â
