HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse dropped a 21-11 decision at rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on Wednesday to conclude its season with a final record of 9-7.
The contest proved to be a high-scoring affair from the jump with the host Flying Dutch ultimately having a bit more gas in the tank to pull away for the win.
Hope led 5-1 early and held a 7-2 lead after one quarter of play. Calvin closed the gap to three at 7-4 and later to four at 10-6 in the second quarter but the Flying Dutch scored four unanswered goals in the final 3:34 of the half to build a 14-6 lead.
Calvin used a pair of goals from senior
Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) to close to within 18-11 in the third, but Hope (11-5) scored the next three goals to build a 10-goal lead and did not look back from there.
Freshman
Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) had a strong offensive game with three goals, two assists and one ground ball.
Gilbert finished her amazing Calvin career with three goals and seven draw controls. Senior
Mekaelah McClymont (Camp Hill, Pa./Covenant Christian Academy) also finished her career on a high-scoring note with two goals and one assist.
Freshman
Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) had a goal and an assist while senior
Lainey Aldridge (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) and sophomore
Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg HS) had a goal apiece.
Senior
Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township HS) had 12 saves in the contest. She finished the season with a Calvin single-season record of 170 saves. Her career total of 387 saves ranks second on the all-time Calvin list.
Gilbert finished as Calvin's all-time career leader in goals scored (254), draw controls (490) and caused turnovers (88) and finishes second on the all-time Calvin career scoring list (291 points). Her draw control total of 168 this year was a new Calvin single-season record. Her career ground ball total of 168 ranks third on the all-time Calvin career list.
Concluding their careers on Saturday were Camp, Gilbert, Aldridge,
Eva Doorlag (Ypsilanti, Mich./Saline HS),
Liske Lieuwen (Atlanta, Ga./Home School) and
Jessica Baker (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS).
Calvin head coach
Blake Boehm had words of gratitude for his team and his senior class after Saturday's game despite the difficult result. "I'm really proud of this team and everything it accomplished this season," said Boehm. "We fought hard today, but just came up short. This is a really good Hope team and they deserve everything they've earned."
