Calvin Women's Lacrosse Trips up Trine to Remain Unbeaten in MIAA

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in conference play and improved to 6-4 overall with an 11-9 victory over the visiting Trine Thunder Saturday afternoon at Eagles Stadium.

The Knights were able to ride six goals from senior Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) and clutch play in goal from senior Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township HS).

Gilbert had six goals on 12 shot attempts and won 11 draw controls. Camp was superb again in the cage with 10 saves on 19 Trine shots (.526), turning away seven Trine free position shots in the process.

With Calvin holding on to a 10-9 lead, Camp made a key save on a shot from the left wing by Trine's Courtney Rhodes with 56 seconds remaining. Calvin was able to scoop up the ground ball after a timeout, Gilbert was able to move past a host of Trine defenders and drop a shot into an empty Trine net to seal the win with 27 seconds remaining.

Calvin (2-0 MIAA) took an early 2-0 lead on first quarter goals from seniors Lainey Aldridge (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) and Mekaelah McClymont (Camp Hill, Pa./Covenant Christian Academy) but Trine (3-3 overall, 0-1 MIAA) came up with a pair of goals in the closing minutes to tie the game 2-2 after one quarter of play.

Gilbert then fired in three second quarter goals including a pair on free position shots with Trine scoring a lone goal late in the quarter to give the Knights a 5-3 halftime lead.

The game then featured a series of runs. Calvin went up 6-3 but Trine retaliated with three unanswered goals to tie the contest 6-6. Calvin came back with three straight goals however capped off by a fourth quarter goal in the slot by freshman Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) on a feed from Aldridge. The Booher goal gave Calvin a 9-6 advantage.

A goal by McClymont put the Knights up 10-7 but Trine crept to within 10-9 on a man-up goal with 5:54 left on a free position shot goal with 3:11 remaining to set the final stage.

Aldridge finished with a goal and three assists. McClymont had two goals and an assist and six draw controls. Booher had a pair of goals. Freshman Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wisc./Watertown HS) caused three Trine turnovers in her midfield spot.

As a team, Calvin won 20 of 24 draw control opportunities.

COACHES COMMENT: "I think we cleaned up a lot of things from Wednesday night (at Alma)," said Calvin head women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "We transitioned well, protected our possessions, won the draw and kept their offense in check. We need to keep the pressure on and be more diligent with our shot placement in future games."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. conference contest.
