Calvin Baseball Loses Series Opener to Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin University baseball team could not stop the offense of the Flying Dutchmen from Hope College in a 19-4 defeat on Thursday in the opening game of a three-game series.

Hope (17-16, 9-7 MIAA) was in command from the start, scoring five runs as it batted around in the top of the first inning, and then scoring at least one run in every inning that followed, including a seven-run seventh inning that put the game away.

Calvin (16-17, 7-8) answered the Flying Dutchmen with one run in the first inning on a Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) double, but did not score against until a Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) double in the sixth inning.

Ryley Reynolds (Meridian, Miss./Russell Charter Academy) took his first defeat of the season after allowing six runs on six hits and two walks in 1.1 innings to fall to 4-1 on the season.

Penn, Warners and Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the Calvin offense with two hits apiece.

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action tomorrow (Friday, April 28) when it travels to Hope for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
