KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin University women's tennis team saw its season end with a 5-1 loss at top-seeded Kalamazoo College in the semi-final round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday.
Calvin (12-8) entered the match as the fourth seed and battled throughout doubles and singles, but could not get over the hump against the MIAA regular season champion Kalamazoo (12-6) team.
The Knights' number-three doubles team of
Alexis Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community) and
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) scored the first Calvin point with an 8-6 doubles win.
The number-two team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) held a late lead in their match, but could not hold off the Hornets in an 8-6 defeat as Kalamazoo took a 2-1 lead into singles.
The Hornets continued their momentum in singles play, taking three of the six matches in straight sets to secure the needed points to advance.
Holman,
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Shoemaker each took a set in their singles matches, but they were not completed after the Hornets got their fifth point.
COACH'S COMMENT: "We're very thankful for our grad students for all their hard work over the last five years," Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross said. "We battled, but Kalamazoo was just too good today. We're looking forward to next year as we have a host of people returning, including some ladies who dealt with season-ending injuries."
