GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The visiting Adrian Bulldogs spoiled Senior Day for the Calvin men's lacrosse team as they handed the Knights a 10-7 defeat Saturday afternoon at Eagles Stadium.
The Knights dip to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Adrian (8-5 overall, 3-0 MIAA) scored the first three goals of the game, putting three in the back of the net in a two-and-a-half minute span to take a 3-0 lead with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter.
Calvin answered with a goal from sophomore
Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South HS) with 2:24 left off a feed from sophomore
Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla./Ovideo HS) and then scored again with just 18 seconds left in the quarter on a shot by sophomore
Josh Newhouse (Grand Junction, Co./Palisades HS) with senior
Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) drawing the assist on the play.
A cagey second quarter then ensued with Calvin giving a golden chance to tie the game with a man-up opportunity with six minutes left in the first half. Adrian was able to force a turnover however and scored shorthanded to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.
Smith scored an early man-up goal in the third quarter to bring the Knights within 4-3. Calvin was given another man-up opportunity moments later but a turnover and subsequent Adrian attack ended up in a Bulldog goal with 9:13 left in the third quarter. The Adrian score ignited a 4-0 run as the Bulldogs built an 8-3 third quarter lead.
A late third quarter goal by Newhouse made it 8-4 and a goal by Sparkling in the opening minutes of the fourth brought the Knights with three at 8-5. Adrian held the Calvin offense in check over the net eight minutes and converted clinching goals of its own in the final five minutes.

Ethan Curtis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) and sophomore
Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) in the final 1:43 of action to provide the final score.
Sophomore
Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Ca./Trabuco Hills HS) had two assists and three ground balls. Sparling finished with a goal and two assists and five ground balls.
Junior goalie
Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah) was busy throughout the match, facing 48 shots at goal. He finished the game with 18 saves and nine ground balls. Freshman
Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) was 12 of 21 on faceoff opportunities and finished with six ground balls.
Calvin committed 20 turnovers and was outshot in the game 48-43.
