KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Calvin University baseball team lost its series opener at Kalamazoo College 14-3 on Friday.
Calvin (13-13, 5-4 MIAA) started well, as
Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) roped a line drive over the right field fence in the top of the first inning to score
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) to put the Knights on top 2-0.
Kalamazoo (20-6, 8-1 MIAA) would take over from there, however, as it scored twice in the first inning, three times in the second, and then put the game away with seven runs in the third to build a 12-2 lead.
The Hornets added two more runs in the fourth inning before closing out the Knights over the last three innings.Â
Gillen accounted for all three of the Knights' runs, as he also added an RBI-single that scored
Gabe Bonemer (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) in the fifth inning. Gillen's home run tied him for the team lead with three homers this season.
On the mound,
James Ross (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) started for the Knights and fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk.
Five Calvin pitchers threw in the game, holding the Hornets to eight hits but struggling with control as they issued eight walks and hit five batters.Â
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, April 15) when it hosts Kalamazoo for a doubleheader to complete the weekend series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
