Calvin Men's Tennis Sweeps Albion

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin University men's tennis team swept Albion 9-0 on Tuesday at Strikwerda Tennis Counts.

The three doubles matches were competitive, but the Knights were able to take home wins in each of them to start the match with a 3-0 overall lead.

The number-one team of Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won 8-6, as did the number-three team of Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi) and Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville). The number-two team of Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) and Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) won their match 8-5.

In singles play, Kim won his number-one match 6-1 and 7-5, while Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) won 6-1 and 6-2 in number-two singles. Emmanuel Henao Estrada (Medellian, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior "La Merced") dropped the opening set, but came back to win in a close third-set tiebreaker 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10) in the number-three match. 

Broek (6-1, 6-4), Johnston (6-2, 6-2) and Warners (6-1, 6-1) each won their singles matches in straight sets to secure the 9-0 overall sweep.

Calvin improved to 10-4 on the season and 3-1 in MIAA play with the win. Albion fell to 4-13 overall and 0-5 in league play in defeat.

COACH'S COMMENT: "It's always good to get a conference win, and we were able to do that today with a good performance," Calvin head tennis coach John Ross said. "We have the rest of the week now to prepare for an important match against a strong league opponent in Trine on Saturday."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's tennis will return to action on Saturday, April 15, when it plays at Trine University in a match scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.
