ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin University baseball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a 9-3 defeat at Alma College on Monday.
Calvin (12-12, 4-3) started the scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Nate Mason (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) that scored
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Knights added to that lead in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI-double from Brown that scored
Logan Nelson (Fremont, Mich./Fremont), followed by a
Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) single that scored Brown to push the Calvin lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom half of the fifth.
Kyle Pretzer (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) cruised through four scoreless innings to start the game for the Knights, but things started to get away from he and the Knights in the fifth inning. After hitting the leadoff batter, Pretzer got the next two hitters but could not get the third out to escape trouble. Instead, three straight hitters reached base on a hit by pitch, and four more Scots scored as the next two batters hit a two-run single and a two-run triple to give Alma (10-16-1, 5-2) a 5-3 lead.
The Calvin offense could not find a response, as three Alma relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while the Scots added four more runs in the seventh inning to put the game away.
Pretzer (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits while striking out three.Â
Brown and Raymond led the Calvin offense with two hits apiece. Brown also added two runs scored.Â
NEXT UP: Calvin baseball will return to action on Wednesday, April 12, when it hosts Alma for a single game at 4:00 PM.
