ADRIAN, Mich. - The Calvin University baseball team opened the MIAA portion of its schedule with a 9-3 defeat at Adrian College on Thursday.
Adrian (9-10, 1-0 MIAA) jumped in front early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Calvin (8-10, 0-1 MIAA) starting pitcher
Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville), and then scored twice more in both the second and fourth innings to take a 7-0 lead.
The Knights jumped back into the game in the sixth inning when they batted around and scored three runs on RBI from
Matt Raymond (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy),
Nate Mason (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) and
Will Mueller (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) to cut the deficit to 7-3, but left the bases loaded before they could do any more damage.
The Bulldogs quickly answered, scoring twice more in the bottom of the sixth off reliever
Connor Comiskey (Shelby Township, Mich./Lutheran North) to push the lead back to six, and then held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win.
Calvin pitchers held the Adrian offense to eight hits, but struggled with control as they combined to walk four batters and hit seven more.Â
Doyle (2-3) took the loss on the mound after allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out four.Â
Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the Knights at the plate with two hits and scored one of the team's three runs.
