ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season with a pair of non-conference victories on Tuesday.
Calvin opened the day with a 6-3 win over Moravian and followed with a 7-2 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the nightcap.
In its win over Moravian, Calvin came back from a 2-1 deficit in doubles play, taking five of the six singles points to seal the win.
Calvin's lone doubles point came at No. 1 doubles as the team of senior 
Emily Schellenboom (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore 
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central High School) won by an 8-4 score.
Freshman 
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo HS) got the singles action going, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Julianna Cassiday at No. 1 singles. Sophomore 
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Izzy Szmodis at No. 3 singles.
Grissom was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Christina Merone at No. 4 singles. Senior Lexy Ganop (Riverview, Mich./Riverview Community HS) continued her strong play, defeating Mara Stapleton 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Sophomore 
Marissa Baker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Megan O'Brien at No. 6 singles.
The Knights then dug down and ground out a win over the Fighting Engineers of Rose-Hulman.
The win was keyed by a sweep of the three doubles points. Schellenboom and Grissom were 8-7 winners at No. 1 doubles, Holman and Baker 8-0 winners at No. 2 doubles and Ganop and freshman 
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS) 8-6 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin split the remaining six singles points to seal the win.
Grissom defeated Ella Dorfmueller 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Ganop was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Camille Clark at No. 4 singles. Baker picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Julia McGuire at No. 5 singles.
Sophomore 
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Violet Keith at No. 6 singles.
COACHES COMMENT: "I thought this team competed extremely well and showed a lot of heart, grit and determination," said Calvin head men's tennis coach 
John Ross. "I'm so proud of this group. In the nightcap we got some big wins from Delanie and Marissa and pulled out a huge comeback win at No. 1 doubles."
NEXT UP: Calvin will face Covenant College (Ga.) and St. Cloud State on Saturday.
