Calvin Men's Lacrosse Falls at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Tx. – The Calvin men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-10 non-conference loss at Southwestern University Tuesday night.

Calvin held a 9-8 lead before the host Pirates went on a 4-1 run to close out the game.

The Knights (2-2) trailed 8-7 at halftime but used third quarter goals from sophomores Cole McKenney (Mission Vjeo, Ca./Trabuco Hills HS) and Christian Coler (Ionia, NY/ Honeyoye Falls-Lima) to take a 9-8 lead.

Southwestern (3-0) answered with back-to-back goals in the final 1:28 of the quarter to lead 10-9.

The Pirates closed out the win with three four quarter goals including a pair of man-up tallies in the final four minutes.

Senior Chase Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) led the Calvin attack with three goals and one assist. Cole McKenney had two goals and one assist.

Calvin received single goals from Josh Moyer (Laurys Station, Pa. Allentown Central Catholic), Josh Newhouse (Grand Junction, Co./Palisade HS), Nick Griffith (Geneva, Fla./Oviedo HS), Greg Gould (Castle Rock, Co./Lutheran HS) and Coler.  

Newhouse added four ground balls. Junior Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Il./Hononegah HS) had 13 saves in defeat for the Knights.

COACHES COMMENT: "Tonight was a tough battle against a good team," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach Dave Hoger. "Southwestern did a great job of exploiting some areas we need to work on Although it's tough to go through some growing pains, we got better tonight. I'm excited to keep growing with this team and look forward to another opportunity to compete on Thursday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will face Eastern University on Thursday at 2 p.m. in a game scheduled to be played on the Southwestern campus in Georgetown.
