Men's Basketball Scores Season-High 98 Points in Win at Alma

ALMA, Mich. - The 13th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team set new season highs in several offensive categories on the way to a 98-62 win at Alma College on Wednesday.

Calvin (19-3, 11-0 MIAA) set new season highs for points (98), made field goals (39) and assists (24) while shooting 60.0 percent from the field on the way to its 11th-straight win to remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Knights controlled the game from start to finish, as Alma (5-17, 2-9 MIAA) saw its only lead of the game at 3-2 in the opening minute and trailed the rest of the way.

Calvin shot the lights out in the opening half, making 61.8 percent of its attempts while Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley), Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) and Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) took turns leading the charge on offense on the way to a 50-28 halftime lead.

Egekeze led all scorers with 15 first-half points, while Varnado (12) and Overway (10) each scored in double figures in the opening half.

The Knights continued to dominate play in the second half, pushing their advantage over 30 points for the first time on an Eli Sensenig (Grayslake, Ill./Westlake Christian Academy) dunk to push the Knights ahead 64-33 with 14:58 to play on the way to the win.

While the Calvin offense was setting new season highs, the defense held the Scots to 40.0 percent from the field and just 20.0 percent (4-20) from beyond the three-point arc.

Egekeze finished with a game-high 23 points on 9-12 shooting from the field, while Overway (16 points), Varnado (14) and Sensenig (11) joined him in double figures. Sensenig also led the Knights with nine rebounds to help Calvin out-rebound the Scots 40-27 for the game.

COACH'S COMMENT: "Good effort on the road," Calvin men's basketball coach Bill Sall said. "I thought we did a good job of attacking their pressure and getting into the lane to make some plays. Good to see Uchenna come out of the gates aggressively. Eli continues to play really well. He was great on defense and almost had a double-double with five assists and zero turnovers. Was great to see our bench come in and give us some quality minutes. Henry Goldkuhle (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central) had a career high tonight (seven points). Sets us up for a huge home game against Trine on Saturday. We need Knight Nation out in full force."

NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball returns to action on Saturday, February 11, when it hosts Trine University in a game for first place in the MIAA standings. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
