GRAND RAPIDS - The 14th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team earned a 92-74 win on Saturday over Olivet at Van Noord Arena to push its winning streak to 10 games.
Calvin (18-3, 10-0 MIAA) put together one of its best offensive performances of the season in the win, shooting 54.1 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and 100 percent (16-16) from the free throw line.
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) got the Knights going on the offensive end with 19 first-half points on 7-10 shooting from the field to help Calvin to a 46-34 halftime lead.
Overway was dominant inside and out as he bullied the Comets in the paint while also making a pair of first-half jumpers (including one three-pointer). With Olivet (9-12, 5-5 MIAA) focused on Overway's scoring in the paint, the Knights got into a rhythm from the outside with six three-pointers.
The second half was more of the same, with Overway continuing to do damage down low with 11 more points, while
Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) scored 10 points from the perimeter to help put the Comets away.
The Calvin defense did a good job for much of the day against a tough Olivet offense that made a number of difficult shots from the mid-range and finished the day shooting 47.4 percent from the field.
On offense, the Knights finished with 23 assists against only 10 turnovers and out-scored the Comets 36-18 in the paint.
Overway finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds, marking his second career game with at least 30 points and his 13th double-double of the season.
Varnado finished with a career-high 18 points off the bench on 7-10 shooting and while going 4-7 from downtown.
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) added 12 points, while
Eli Sensenig (Grayslake, Ill/Westlake Christian Academy) and
Luka Ressler (Caledonia, Mich./Catholic Central) each scored 10 points.
COACH'S COMMENT: "You have to give credit to Olivet. I thought they made a lot of tough shots today," Calvin men's basketball head coach
Bill Sall said. "That's a good offensive team. Probably one of the best in the conference. On our side, I thought we did a really good job with 23 assists to only 10 turnovers. Jalen, I thought, was great today. That's one of his better games he's played this year. Also nice to see
Owen Varnado shot the ball with a lot of confidence today. So I'm happy with how we played against a very dangerous team."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball returns to action on Wednesday, February 8, when it travels to Alma for a game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM.
