ORLANDO, Fla. - The Calvin men's tennis team continued its spring break trip Tuesday, splitting a pair of matches, defeating Moravian 9-0 and falling to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 6-3.
The Knights are now 6-1 on the season.
In its win over Moravian, Calvin swept all three doubles points. Freshmen
Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) rolled to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and freshman
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) pulled out an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior
Isaac Jeong (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and junior
Jared Berghorst (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville HS) were also 8-5 winners at No. 3 doubles.
The Knights then made swift work of the Greyhounds in singles action. Junior
Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) toppled Shayca Farhad 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Kim was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Wyatt Marshall at No. 2 singles.
Freshman Emmanuel Henao Estra (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior) then cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zach Lebby at No. 3 singles.
Warners was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Ronny Pimentel Ferre at No. 4 singles. Freshman
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) defeated Pisani Kieran 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Junior
Adam Zentner (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Labosky Watt at No. 6 singles
In its second match of the day, Calvin started off slow trailing Rose-Hulman 2-1 after doubles.
The No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore
Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and freshman
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) gathered the Knights only doubles victory with a score of 8-5. The Knights fought hard but were unable to recover from their slow start, winning only two singles matches.
In No. 2 singles Johnston fell short to Grant Paradowski 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) after losing the tiebreaker in the second set. No.3 singles freshman
Emmanuel Henao Estrada (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior) and Rhian Seneviratne fought in a thrilling three set match. Seneviratne came out on top with a 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 victory.
At No. 5 singles Broek posted a 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 victory after battling Andrew Leonard. Junior
Adam Zentner (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) captured the No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-3 over Corey Pollard.
COACHES COMMENT: "The Rose-Hulman men were really strong," said Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross. "And give Rose-Hulman credit for winning some big tiebreakers in the match. It was a pretty good day overall. Good to get a win over Moravian and then we fought hard against Rose-Hulman and learned some things about ourselves."
