ORLANDO, Fla. – The Calvin men's tennis team opened its spring trip with a 9-0 win over Saint Mary's of Minnesota to improve to 5-0 on the dual match season.
Calvin took an early 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles flights. Freshmen
Corwin Kim (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and
Tanner Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Stuart Johnston (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and freshman
Ryan Broek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior
Adam Zentner (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) and junior
Harrison Sindelar (Westfield, Ind./Westfield HS) were 8-4 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Calvin then won all six singles flights in straight sets.
Sindelar dispatched of Evan Huemoeller 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Kim picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over E.J. Hietala.
Johnston had to dig down at No. 3 singles but came away with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Josh Janssen.
At No. 4 singles freshman
Emmanuel Henao Estrada (Medellin, Columbia/Escuela Normal Superior defeated Tucker Stene 6-2, 6-2.
Warners made quick work of Caden Rodning at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Broek defeated Matt Besek 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to complete the win.
COACHES COMMENT: "Great effort and determination from our guys today as everyone came in focused," said Calvin head tennis coach
John Ross. "We are looking forward to a challenging day of tennis on Tuesday."
NEXT UP: Calvin will compete in a pair of matches on Tuesday, taking on Moravian at 11:30 and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 6:30 p.m.
