GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- Tonight the 23rd ranked Calvin women's basketball team traveled to Kalamazoo to face off with the Hornets. The Knight controlled the game right out of the gate and went on to get a commanding victory as they won 82-45.
After tonight Calvin improved their MIAA record to 11-4 while moving to a 19-5 overall record. The Knights outshot the Hornets 47.2 percent to 27.6 percent and dominated the glass as they scooped up 15 more rebound than Kalamazoo.
At the beginning of the game both teams traded baskets as they sought to gain control. Although the Knight took the early lead and maintained it throughout the first quarter, the Hornets hung around. After the first quarter the Knights only led by 5 with the score being 16-11. In the second quarter the Knight continued to put pressure on Kalamazoo as sophomore Emma Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored on back-to-back possessions. Led by Gabby Timmer's (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) 10 first half points Calvin went into halftime with a comfortable 18-point lead.
As the second half began the Knights let their defense shine as they held Kalamazoo to just 8 points in the third quarter. As the game went on the Knights continued to score at will. They dominated in the paint, outscoring the Hornets down low 46-20. They also saw huge contributions from younger players as the bench contributed for 43 points in the win.
Timmer finished the game with 14 points and 5 rebounds while senior Leah Harris (Frisco, Texas/Lone Star) had 11 points. Freshman Adelaide Douglass (Mattawan, Mich./Mattawan) also gave the Knights a boost with her 8 points and 5 rebounds.
COACHES COMMENT: "Solid performance from our squad tonight," said head coach Mark Christner. "We continued to apply defensive pressure throughout and all who played helped us tonight. Now, big one on Saturday."
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 18th when they travel to Albion for their final regular season matchup. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
