Calvin Women's Basketball Dominates Geneva on Day Two of Trine Invite

ANGOLA, Ind. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team competed in its second and final game of the Trine Holday Invite where it defeated Geneva (Pa.) 93-39.

After today's game the Knights improve to 6-5 overall while Geneva falls to 6-7.

After having some difficulty creating opportunities on offense yesterday the Knights came out looking to turn things around. After scoring the first basket, Calvin never looked back as it pounced on the Tornados and outscored them 21-5 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Knights continued to build on their lead as they scored relentlessly. Freshman Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) racked up 10 points while shooting 2-3 from behind the arc. On defense Calvin held Geneva to a 16.7 shooting percentage and forced nine turnovers. Heading into halftime the Knights had a 43-17 lead.

In the second half Calvin kept its momentum rolling as the Geneva defense couldn't find  a way to stop the Knights from getting to the basket. Emma Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) continued to cause problems in the paint as she raked up six points in the third quarter while junior Grace Rosser (Allendale, Mich./Allendale) came off the bench in the fourth quarter and quickly added 7 points to the Calvin total. The Knights showed complete dominance on both ends of the floor and when the final whistle blew they walked away with the 93-39 victory.

The Knights finished the game with a 37.9 shooting percentage while shooting 32 percent from behind the arc and holding Geneva to just a 16.2 shooting percentage. They also out rebounded the Tornados 76-49 and out scored them from the paint 50-14. Calvin's bench also had another strong showing as it was responsible for 58 points on the day.

LaRue finished the game as the leading scorer with 13 points while Witte finished with 12 points. Sophomore RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) and sophomore Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian) both tallied 9 points while Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in 8 points. Calvin had 14 different players score in the win.

COACHES COMMENT: "Good win to head into a short break on," said head coach Mark Christner. "The game generally comes down to playing with great energy and with each other. Our group exemplified that today verus an improved but undermanned Geneva team. The opportunity our team has in front of us is to keep improving and building on the tremendous energy this group is capable of playing with every time."

UP NEXT: The Knight will be back in action on December 29th when they travel to the west coast to take on George Fox. Tip off is set for 6PM (PST).
