DE PERE, Wis. - The second-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team opened its four-game road stretch over the Christmas break with an 88-66 win at St. Norbert College on Saturday.
Calvin (8-0) was in control from the start, as
Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) hit a three-pointer on the team's opening possession and the Knights never trailed the rest of the way.
The Knights built an early 27-15 lead before St. Norbert (7-2) cut its deficit to four (29-25), but Calvin finished the half on a 15-6 run that was capped by a three-pointer from
Luka Ressler (Caledonia, Mich./Catholic Central) in the final seconds to give the Knights a 44-31 halftime edge.
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) led the Knights with 12 points on 5-6 shooting (including 2-3 from three-point range), while Ressler added nine points and three assists.
Calvin continued to roll in the second half, quickly pushing its lead to 19 (56-37) in the first four minutes and led by at least 13 points the rest of the way en route to the win.
The Knights shot 56.0 percent from the field and 42.9 percent (12-28) from three-point range in the win. Defensively, Calvin held the Green Knights to 39.2 percent overall and just 20 percent (3-15) from beyond the arc.
All five Calvin starters finished in double figures, led by Overway with 26 points. Overway finished the game 10-13 overall and made three of his four attempts from beyond the arc in only 23 minutes of action. He also led the Knights with six rebounds.
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) scored 12 points, while Ressler added 11. Egekeze and
Owen Varnado (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian) each scored 10 points.
