SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The 10th-ranked Calvin University men's basketball team completed a 2-0 weekend at the Great Lakes Invitational with a 74-54 win over La Roche at Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon.
Points were tough to come by for both teams on the second day of the early back-to-back. The Knights looked to impose their size advantage down low throughout, while the Redhawks pressured them full court to speed up the game and force turnovers.
Calvin (3-0) trailed 17-16 with 9:14 to play in the opening half, but took over from that point with a 19-0 run to close the half on the way to a 35-17 advantage at the break.
The Knights held the La Roche (0-4) offense to just 20.0 percent (7-35) from the field in the half and outscored the Redhawks 20-0 in the paint with the help of 10 points from
Jalen Overway (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian).
The Calvin defense continued to control the game in the second half, holding La Roche to 39.4 percent shooting for the half. The Knights pushed their lead as high as 26 (74-48) late in the game, and never led by fewer than 15 points over the final 20 minutes.
After a five-point first half, senior
Marcus Bult (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Academy) came alive in the second half with 12 points on 5-6 shooting from the field (including 2-3 from beyond the arc).
Calvin finished the game shooting 51.0 percent from the field and used their size advantage to out-score La Roche 36-10 in the paint. The Knights also out-rebounded the Redhawks 47-28 for the game.
Three Knights finished with 17 points on the day. Both Overway and Bult finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, while
Uchenna Egekeze (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Egekeze was later named to the GLI All-Tournament Team.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Really good weekend for us," Calvin head coach
Bill Sall said. "We played against some great competition and amazing coaching staffs. Today's game was a tough one. Too many turnovers and missed opportunities, but we had a couple of great runs that allowed us to get some breathing room. Our bench gave us a great lift today. Uchenna and Jalen were solid all weekend and I thought
Marcus Bult played incredibly well. A huge lift for us."
NEXT UP: Calvin men's basketball returns home for a pair of games next weekend. The Knights will host Concordia-WI on Friday, November 24, followed by a game against Wilmington on Saturday, November 25.
